B.C. Wildfires Force Mass Evacuations
British Columbia has declared a provincial state of emergency as explosive wildfires race through the southern Interior, forcing more than 20,000 people to flee and destroying homes under dangerously hot, dry conditions.
The Bald Range wildfire near Summerland and Peachland expanded with extraordinary speed, overwhelming evacuation routes and prompting rescues as flames advanced toward communities along Okanagan Lake. Officials said the fire nearly doubled in size overnight, while Premier David Eby warned that homes and other properties had already been lost. The scale and speed of the emergency led the province to invoke extraordinary powers to secure accommodations, control travel and support evacuations.
Fire crews are confronting a volatile combination of drought, heat, wind and extremely dry fuels. The fire became intense enough to generate its own weather, including lightning, a sign of the enormous energy being released. With hot conditions persisting and little relief expected from rain in the immediate outlook, the crisis has become a stark warning of how quickly wildfire can turn from a seasonal hazard into a large-scale threat to communities, infrastructure and emergency systems.
