Republicans’ Fauci Fixation Consumes The Senate
Six years after the pandemic’s worst phase, Republican senators again placed Dr. Anthony Fauci at the centre of American politics, threatening contempt proceedings after he invoked the Fifth Amendment during a hostile hearing on COVID-19’s origins.
The hearing, led by Republican Senator Rand Paul, was billed as an inquiry into the pandemic and federal support for virus research. Instead, it became another bitter confrontation between Paul and Fauci, the former government scientist who helped direct the U.S. response to COVID-19.
Fauci declined to answer dozens of questions on legal advice, arguing that years of accusations, threats and demands for prosecution made self-incrimination a genuine concern. Republicans portrayed his silence as proof of wrongdoing; Democrats and scientific supporters described the proceeding as political retribution unsupported by evidence of misconduct.
