The spectacle of robots planting trees or carrying injured wildlife can seem almost utopian beside the scale of today’s fires. Yet the underlying technologies are becoming practical. Artificial intelligence can combine weather, satellite and terrain data to identify where fire is most likely to spread. Autonomous aircraft and ground robots can inspect areas too dangerous for crews, while specialized machines can clear brush, reseed damaged land and monitor forests long after television cameras leave. These tools cannot substitute for cutting emissions, managing forests or competent government. They can, however, multiply human capacity. The most hopeful future is not one in which AI takes command of nature, but one in which human judgment directs intelligent machines toward restoration, resilience and the protection of life.
