A world on fire as extreme heat becomes the new global emergency

A fierce wildfire near Paris forced evacuations and disrupted highways and trains as western Europe endured its third major heatwave of the summer. Across the Atlantic, a sprawling heat dome threatened dangerous temperatures across much of the United States.

The latest disasters are no longer isolated weather events. More than 10,000 excess deaths were recorded during Europe’s late-June heatwave, while fires, crop losses, strained power systems and suffering wildlife show how rapidly extreme heat is remaking daily life.
